Match day minus one - CUFC 1 Sky Blues 3

Pre-season games are usually more about the occasion than the game itself, but Cambridge away was much fun. In attendance, J, C and G2, setting off in the Champagne Express from a madly busy Kings Cross, with a smattering of sky blue shirts for company.

We did a tiny bit of tourist trail, then found ourselves eating the now traditional Yorkshire Pudding Roast Beef Wrap, before retiring to watch the end of the first 20:20 semi final in the Crowne Plaza downstairs bar. A quick taxi ride later and we were outside the ground. Displaying a politeness and question construction not seen outside a football ground since the 1880's, G2 established that the Coventry people should proceed in an orderly fashion through the field to the away end entrance.

Inside the ground, the 416 sky blue faithful were on fairly good form. The team: Ireland (non Irish Aussie replacing Westwood at the last minute) Fox (King of the free kick) Dann (England's number 5) Ward (newly shorn) Steve Wright (in the afternoon) Julian Gray (no really, he's conned another manager into thinking he's the answer to the left side of midfield) Gunnarson (large chunky midfield destroyer) Boozy (in theory the silky ball player) Tabb (Superhobbit) Best (Loves a 4-5-1) Eastwood (wheels on my house go round and round)

Match summary: Eastwood popped one in the bottom corner early doors, the Fox hit a cracking free kick to make it 2 nil at half time. Second half, Freddy showed genuine class inside the box to make it 3-0, then they had a drinks break, then we gave them a penalty which Ireland volleyballed in to make it 3-1. Then the ref blew for full time, and the teams stayed on the pitch to warm down and hold what looked like a seance in the centre circle.

Man of the match: Freddy Show pony award: Julian Gray Crowd summary: Good natured, good version of Happy Birthday to the fat bloke at the back of the stand, and an amusingly abandoned version of "You can't read, you can't write but that don't really matter" when it was pointed out that "It's Cambridge, I can assure you that they can read and write, it's Cambridge" 416 in the away end apparently. Not bad for an away non-glamourous pre-season friendly. Roll on Norwich on the 9th at the Ricoh

Saturday 25th July 2008 - Cambridge United Away

Pre-season sorts the men from the boys. And the boys from the girls. Cambridge United away on the last Saturday in July is a test of character, devotion and sanity.

As I write, our numbers have already been severely depleted due to school commitments, financial challenges, apathy and the 20:20 finals day. No matter, Jim, myself and our new ginger substitute (substitute for the other travelling team members, not for any other gingers) are making the effort and going to see all our shiny new players, and the not so shiny old players, stroll to a comfortable 4-2 victory at the old Abbey Stadium. Looking at the pictures on the website, it seems that the new Trade Recruitment stadium has one slightly presentable stand, and a terrace for us to stand on. Sensible shoes only required.

History lovers among us will remember the epic FA Cup battles against Cambridge United in 1992, when we drew 1-1 at Highfield Road with Dion scoring for them, and then lost thanks to a Lee Hurst own goal from a missed penalty in the replay at the Abbey. Many of us were there, but strangely Matt was on the terrace, but not with us.

Kings Cross for 11, champagne on the train, lunch somewhere presentable, and a bit of football for good measure. The season starts here.

Our First Post

It's now July, the team is back in pre-season training, and a wave of optimism is washing over me in a way that only Douglas Bader on a surfboard could begin to understand.

Our journey to the Premiership begins today.
